Physical Education part 2.
Here's another P.E. rant from me... maybe not so much a rant as just my opinions. I don't understand how schools and administration can want to cancel P.E. programs. I can see why when programs just throw the balls out and tell the students to go play. But, you have programs that really transform students lives. Like Adaptive P.E. programs. I am a huge advocate and supporter for adaptive P.E. programs. Having special needs students involved can help change students lives and perspectives on life. Special Needs students can feel apart of something and make friends when the environment is right. I understand that not every adaptive P.E. program is going to be ran perfect; but students can be exposed to helping and participating with special needs. That alone can change a persons whole perspective on the special needs community. That is just one benefit of Physical Education. I'm sure throughout this blog I will write about many more benefits!

I feel that students with special needs should have the opportunity to participate in a physical education program that adapts and meets the majority of their needs, like you mentioned the benefits for these students can be very significant across the different domains (cognitive, psychomotor, and affective). Their disabilities should not play such a large role in limiting their exposore and engagement in physical activity. During high school I took a class called Best Buddies in which we were paired with a student with special needs, I was able to learn a lot from that experience and I was able to assist my buddy so that he could enjoy his experience during PE. I hope you keep pushing/fighting for the topics you are invested in.
ReplyDeleteI love this blog post! I don't like that the arts and p.e. are always the first to be cut. I think that students need all the courses and everything is equally important. You use different parts of your brain for each thing. One thing that my school had in high school was a program for the special needs students that had the students work with students from best buddies to interact and have extra help for the teachers. I believe this was a perfect idea and I loved physical education at my school. I don't know why somebody would want to cancel it unless they were the ones picked last in a game back in the old days. You could be an advent spokesperson!
