High School Students
Now onto to the high school students. As I remember, I was very active in high school, I played three sports and was constantly in the gym. But, I don't believe that prepared for my adult years. Yes, it made me love sports even more, and I can probably run a good basketball practice. But, I didn't leave high school knowing the healthy things to eat and how much of those things I should be eating daily. High school didn't help me create a workout routine or provide me the knowledge with how to properly and safely do lifts. As a future P.E. teacher, I want the students to learn how to create a routine depending on the kind of results they are looking for. Also, how to safely eat on a diet or to bulk up. These are the things that will help students once they leave high school. Tossing the balls out onto the court isn't going to cut it anymore.

I totally agree. I feel like they threw ideas at you like "hey you should eat healthy" but never gave us the means to do so. Even now I don't know what to look for in food. There is also a thing in high school where the kids just want to eat fast food. Anytime, my friends and I hung out we would always go out to eat at somewhere cheap which was always a fast food restaurant. I think if they were able to get the information they need to accomplish that then they would find it to be very helpful. Make me one while you're at it ;)
ReplyDeleteI couldn't agree more with you! I noticed when I got to college, I wasn't really prepared to start lifting with my basketball team. I didn't know a lot of lifts, and my form was completely wrong in the beginning. Of coarse now being in my junior year, I've learned how to properly lift and I've learned new exercises. Also when I was in high school, I barely remember PE teachers talking about nutrition and the proper things to eat. I feel as though they thought this was common sense, but I really don't think this is!
ReplyDeleteI think that the point you made was a good one, even if kids are physically active it needs to be paired or supported with their nutritional habits. A good diet can really help students see results in their lifting or personal exercise programs. I think that when students are better informed about what the subjects of nutrition, health, and fitness encompass then they are able to make better choices in their personal lives.
ReplyDeleteI agree! I think PE teachers just quickly went through health and focused on the sports. Don't get me wrong, that was my favorite part, but if I started eating healthier earlier it wouldn't be as hard now. I would agree with Morgan's post about lifting. I had one lifting class in High School and after that never really lifted again until college. So it was like starting from scratch. I think more PE teachers now should focus on the basic skills of the how to part of it all. If teachers actually took the time to really talk about better healthy habits and how to lift properly, it could make a difference.
